I am very surprised and pleased Everything Everywhere All At Once won big last night. Literally the last time a movie I enjoyed won Best Picture was The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. And frankly, I think that might be the ONLY movie within my lifetime that was true of. Almost every year the Academy falls all over itself to praise unwatchable bummers. To see a fun feel-good movie win is just what we needed.
The fact that movies like this rarely are nominated for Oscars, much less ever win them is why nobody watches the Oscars anymore. There is no stakes if nobody has seen or cared about the Best Picture nominations. Especially knowing the popcorn picture they'll invariably nominate for balance has no shot of winning. This was a rare good year for the Academy.
