[Crumbling Empire]
The only time I ever witnessed this series brought up in any conversation was to rip on it for looking bland. Or otherwise, not resembling Adult Swim by any stretch of the imagination.
My first impression was that it was an FX cartoon trapped in some [as] green light.
And not to be prude, the overall situation at Adult Swim rightfully warrants the judgmental eyes.
The first episode was well done. It started off dull, and I fell asleep shortly after my first attempt at watching. But the show eventually won me over.
If you’re gonna rag on the art style, compare Royal Crackers to just about any adult animated series from the past decade that either tries to imitate something else, or is visually lesser than the bare minimum.
After watching an episode, I can’t even say Royal Crackers “looks bland” anymore. At least they actually try to put some umph in it.
I like the assortment of characters.
Theo Jr. has the most personality of them all, Stebe’s a decent comedy straight-man to keep the boat going, and Deb only proves to me that these sitcoms really are getting better at writing the wives.
The unconscious Theodore Sr. offers this grand novelty to adult animated sitcoms that I haven’t seen in a long time.
It’s refreshing to have a gimmick like a comatose grandfather on your show.
It was 18 years ago where I was amazed this network could have a chain-smoking blonde haired squid cook some meth with her tits hanging out.
We’re sort of past the shock-jock point of gay babies and gay aliens, but it’s nice to see this show bring some of that back in style without it having to be a big deal.
You’ll hear lots of references to taints and anuses. One of the characters continuously runs into glass as he’s racing to take a shit while reading.
There’s a handful of internet-savvy jokes that you just have to get used to. The one that made me laugh was Theo making fun of Quibi for going out of business.
This program not taking itself seriously is what makes it all worthwhile. You’ll find yourself hardly caring for the plot whatsoever.
Is the overall show a proper fit? I’ll say it again. This looked like it was begging to be pitched over at FXX or maybe Comedy Central, and they just found themselves saddled along Warner Media Land.
I’ll give props to Williams Street and Titmouse that this could’ve been much worse without their input.
