Family Guy "Old West"
I love that Quagmire is underwhelmed by Alan's vaccine stance at the end.
The bit about the ass-hitting door was funny. Now Old West is actually worried about that.
The horses playing videogames were great too.
The Giant Chicken is rich and Quahog has the richest group of chickens in the country. The more I learn about the Giant Chicken, the more confused I am by him.
Joe having the fake app and not really having any sponsors for his podcast is on-brand for Joe Swanson.
I have personally never had an Al Pacino moment. I think I consider myself lucky.
Cleveland Junior confused for Lizzo? Mean, but part of me can see it when they animate him like that.
Principle Shepherd's advice to never become a principle seems sound when you consider how he, Skinner from The Simpsons, and Lewis from American Dad ended up.
Stewie seemed kind of "Just there" this episode, and wasn't given much to do.
Pretty funny episode. But still, Wild West doesn't really compare to Adam. ***1/2.
Family Guy "Single White Dad"
I've been having a minor problem with Family Guy this season, and I figured I'd take this review to talk about it.
Except this specific episode was a gem. Maybe next week then.
I think Donkey Kong is a better game than it's described as here. But the truth is, it WOULD make a killer house. You can call Peter the worst father on television. He is. He's also the only one who would ever do Donkey Kong House. While we're keeping score of the important things.
Lois rubbing Brian's face in the reality of "The English Patient" was cathartic on every level. I love it when the show gives Lois empowering moments against Brian's horribleness, and since he's now constantly horrible, they are pleasurably frequent. But yeah, the dude sucks, and watching her literally rub his face in how much he sucks feels DAMN good. It's not just the audience who hates and is sick of Brian. It's not just us at all.
I love that everyone always yawns when Becky talks about Scott. I especially the last bit when we realized it's not just Peter.
What would Scott think? Give Becky a break. She was acquitted. That is a freaking fabulous joke.
Lois pointing out Becky could do better is something that really shouldn't need to be said. In other words the entire premise of the episode was a stretch.
Kirby makes a good name for pink videogame marshmallows.
Yeti Coolers are the right coolers for guys without personalities.
When Quagmire says that golf takes 6 hours to play, out of town, in a different shirt, suddenly the entire sport sounds suspect, doesn't it? Really insightful and alarming joke. I hope every husband who makes their wives watch this show laughs EXTRA nervously at that joke, while darting their eyes away from them. They're onto them now. Gulp!
The climax was a wonderful comedy of errors. Bonnie and the thing with the washing machine was an amazingly goofy and random complication to the whole thing. Well timed comedy nonsense.
I love that the Prowler is still on the roof during the last shot.
Hilarious episode. I'll save my gripe sesh for next week. *****.
Family Guy "White Meg Can't Jump"
Gilbert Gottfried had a role on Family Guy before he died! And he poked fun at himself! The Fox airing dedicated the episode to him but the Hulu version didn't.
I like the self-aware joke of Family Guy saying it's only on Britney's side now because it's popular. And really, that's Family Guy's entire problem regarding celebrities. Some of their slams (and even compliments) have aged MEGA poorly. Not as bad as The Simpsons venerating Elon Musk. But ballpark.
The Stewie stuff didn't do much for me because I think the B story couldn't decide what it was about, which is usually why bad Family Guy stories are bad. The good thing is it WAS the B story, but still it felt a bit aimless going from conspiracy theories to Stewie with multiple personalities.
I thought the ending of Peter telling Meg he never wanted her, and them both knowingly smiling at each other was a little too dark and cynical, even for this show and those characters.
The episode was decent overall though. And looking over the rest of the night, this three star toon is the only one to get a passing grade from me, and shockingly won the night of Fox toons. I can't believe it either. That's how off their game everyone else was. ***.
Family Guy "Adoptation"
The episode ending on "This isn't working. You have to leave," is the precise reason they never should have done this plotline.
First cold opening in awhile. Usually when Bob's Burgers characters appear, they are being roasted. But Homer Simpson eating a sandwich and Peter stuck with black coffee and toast without the Emmy winner discount shows that the show is sort of now understanding the reality of the current lay of the pop culture land regarding the Belchers.
I'm also positive the Chris at the zoo joke didn't start OFF as a joke about the Will Smith Oscar slap. But since it occurred off-screen, it was probably super easy to turn it into that.
So-so episode. The Great North easily won the night of Fox toons. ***.

Thanks for making this thread!
[Old West]
This episode basically wants to alter the namesake on West. Not have it be in relation to THE Mayor Adam West, but have it become yet another string of cowboy jokes and references. Which is fine. He is Wild West for a reason. Even if it’s a lame and played out one.
A positive I can point out: Old West (the father) visually goes for a more traditional approach with Family Guy’s art style. He’s a character I believe absolutely could fly with the early revival years. His backstory being America’s Got Talent nails that home as well.
It’s basically a bland celeb caricature VS a simple cartoon guy who actually fits much more favorably in that world. That we’ll more than likely never see again anyway.
Whole episode wasn’t very entertaining, but there were a couple good jokes.
The door hitting Peter’s ass on the way out was funny, even when you knew it was comin’.
The horse late for work was undoubtedly the best.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Single White Dad]
Judging by the title, I thought they were gonna go all in on stereotypes of Peter taking care of the kids SOLO for a week.
This was a less than half-baked “Peter has a love affair” episode. Which, when you got like 87 iterations of that same premise... being less than half-baked would actually be welcoming.
Lois showed slight promise when she put the fear into Brian. It didn’t take long before she was just shafted into something Peter had to hide from his perky new lady friend. Which is a real shame because the writers recently turned her around.
I guess it was amusing when Lois spilled out that Peter’s well out of his league for these millions of scenarios he’s found himself in.
The only joke I found myself exceptionally liking was the Donkey Kong house. That was right at the beginning of the episode. The setup was fine. Lois’ reaction however was incredibly underwhelming, so it wasn’t even all that great either. The bit would’ve been a riot around season eight or so.

[White Meg Can’t Jump]
I’ll give them this. The show is still significantly holding back on Meg after the past couple or so seasons.
Yes, Peter and Lois continue saying terrible things at her expense. But the show in this instance decides to add some self awareness.
The insults toward Meg are directly commented on, opposed to the previous routine of piling on without providing any actual thought.
And I’m not saying any of this as a jab.
You just have to ask yourself these questions.
Is it entertaining?
Are they actually improving on this character?
Or, is this just another blatant/flavorless approach at a twenty year old running gag?
I mean, hey! Meg won a championship basketball game after standing up to her dad! Possibly the most positive ending on the show that she’s ever had.
My main gripe is that the entire joke premise wasn’t even trying.
**Quagmire: Your father annihilates your self esteem in front of everyone, and that’s what helps you win your basketball game!
Meg: Okay. **
Fans disliked the Meg bashing even as far back as 2005. And while that’s still the case for many, I’d at least believe they’d miss when the joke was delivered in a more seamless fashion. See “Hell Comes to Quahog.”
Aside from Meg, the new B plot also had little to offer. Stewie witnesses his parents having sex yet again. You know the last time that happened? Four episodes ago.
RIP Gilbert Gottfried.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Adoptation]
Of all the episodes from this second batch as of yet, this one let me down the most.
Carter episodes started really becoming a thing around the turn of the 2010s.
They gave the character some more personality beyond simply hating Peter. Something I wish FG could’ve done with Francis as well.
Carter episodes eventually ran out of steam. They stopped doing them as much as before, and the ones they’ve been doing lately have been a downer.
Awhile back they aired an episode about Lois discovering (again) her father’s marriage was unfaithful.
This one again goes into Lois’ moodswings when Carter adopts a little girl.
The Pewterschmidt Manor becomes that little girl’s home for 30 minutes and she’s out.
None of the jokes are worth relishing on. They do a “keep my name” parody that’s off-screen and about a year after South Park went for the same joke sarcastically.
I’m noticing that the show’s soft-revived Bruce as Mike Henry doesn’t do Cleveland anymore.
And that’s about it for now. I hope there’s another episode soon that’s about as good as the first half of the order.
I redownloaded Quest for Stuff after nine odd years just so I could potentially toy around with some of the animations.

After awhile of repeated breaks, we get an hour of Family Guy this Sunday. Two new episodes.
The season’s already close to wrapping up and I guess they wanna speed the process a little.

[The Bird Reich]
On this special occasion, Family Guy is back on a timeslot I wish they could’ve maintained.
This episode doesn’t have very much to offer. More of a downer than anything else.
Brian’s story is just him sulking over his strained friendship with Stewie, without it being all that amusing.
I understand a lot of people hate Brian for one reason or the other. He used to be my favorite character. But even with all that aside, he’s usually not this much of a whiny bitch.
Snobby for the sake of comedy, sure. But this feels like the most he’s ever mindlessly sulked.
Now typically, I haven’t fawned over any fourth wall breaks in the longest time. Mainly because they’re in every episode.
But I must admit, it was something the way they turned around Brian’s entire failed writer arc by having Stewie point out none of the FG staff, or even Seth MacFarlane himself have ever truly succeeded in book related endeavors.
Peter’s storyline is also underwhelming, considering one of my all-time favorite bits in the entire show was the fantasy of him being Hitler’s brother.
So, having Peter’s bird be Hitler’s former pet. Alright...I guess?
Meg’s play with Carter getting excited made me laugh my ass off. Aside from that? The bird being a Nazi wasn’t even exciting.
Gonzo shouted a few Nazi German things, but it wasn’t like they even went all the way with him whatsoever. By today’s standards, it was the most milquetoast attempt at trying to be offensive. I almost begged it to be A LITTLE more daring... and these are Hitler jokes we’re talking about. Jokes this show has already told a million times over... but come on!
- - - - - - - -
[A Bottle Episode]
Lois, no more chowder for you.
This was without a doubt the better of the two.
Another crazy Lois story that gets the job done.
The Brian & Stewie story this time around was basically fan service. Except them trying to sell Taffy sounds like the most boring thing ever. I don’t know if their banter was worth it. It all breezed by, and I hardly gave it any mind. Not even their scene with Quagmire.
If you’re a fan of Brian’s late girlfriend Jess, Casey Wilson returned for this episode as Lois’ antagonist, Dottie.
Also, I checked the credits for names, and I’m not sure if they got James Taylor to do the episode or not.
I would say “don’t worry! South Park didn’t get him for Chef’s song about prostitutes either!” Only difference is, they wrote it as if they actually got him to cameo extensively. And I guess it does sound like him.

Family Guy "The Bird Reich"
I don't feel like the resolution worked. Stewie is jealous he's never accomplished all his goals... at the age of 1? Yeah, that's kind of stupid.
Asking about who would follow Hitler's ideals and it being 40% of America is I believe lowballing it.
The Fox News joke was a LITTLE obvious, wasn't it?
Only this show would believe a person could use the white privilege argument as a form of bullying passive-aggression. I'm sorry some people are fed up with your racism and sexism, Seth MacFarlane. How terrible that must feel for you.
In fairness to Seth, Stewie claiming a signed copy of his book is worth less than a new copy sort of makes me forgive him. ALL the Family Guy writers are being self-deprecating in that moment.
I love Brian claiming you can stop a Prius by cupping the wind.
Still, eh. **1/2.
Family Guy "A Bottle Episode"
I loved the previous attempt to show Lois' petty obsession and psychopathy "Customer Of The Week" but this felt less successful. "Customer Of The Week" was a comedy of errors and the arc here of Lois getting the upper hand with Dottie felt less earned. Also not to put too fine a point on it, but Customer was pretty much strong enough to carry an entire episode. It didn't need a lame Brian and Stewie B story.
Calling MAGA people stupid is on-brand for the politics of the show, but it strikes me as low-hanging comedy fruit. I understand how the show is finding comedy hard without racism and sexism to sustain it. But having the only real cruel shots it takes be at that one specific thing makes the show feel uncreative and repetitive. The show isn't always that. But it needs to find a new axe to grind. It's worse than the fact that they aren't changing anybody's minds. They simply aren't impressing or amusing even people who agree with them. That's how you know it's been overdone.
I like Lois telling Peter he's very close to being a sitting in the chair to watch guy.
The size of the shampoo bottle was pretty damn huge. And the idea that Lois did it intentionally fits in with what we know about Lois, but it also makes us feel worse she doesn't get the comeuppance she did in "Customer Of The Week".
No, Lois, this is NOT being canceled. Idiot.
Alex Borstein's performance in the rant at the end is pretty great. I don't think this episode is as great as Lois' bits in "Customer". But that was a pretty pleasurably unhinged moment.
Carly got the helicopter in the divorce.
I was hoping for better from a "Lois is a cruel sociopath" episode. Not a great night for Fox Toons but The Great North won on points. ***.

[Vat Man and Rob ‘Em]
“I only talk about one politician, and that’s Mayor McCheese.”
Before even watching: Peter’s story on the guide sounded genuinely fun.
Not the first time Peter and his friends underwent hijinks at the brewery, but it’s a plotline most welcome. And sure enough, it lived up to decent expectations.
The “Principals With Vices” joke was stupidly good, then what followed was an insanely dark bit about Shepherd having Chris’ nudes.
The retired Nightwatcher should be the most entertaining one-off character of the season. Nice of him to be part of that heist. His idea of swapping Pawtucket supply with a hijacked beer truck was golden.
Brian & Stewie story was yet again disappointing as expected, though the cutaway gag with the plunger was perfect and just about all I could ask for with Brian.
Stewie to Chris: “Your agent said you wanted more scenes. These are your scenes.”
^ Ah, so that’s what their relationship boils down to. And next week’s show with Brian & Stewie will have Meg as the third wheel, so there’s that. Set in Russia too, so I just know Mila went nuts in the recording booth.
Until next time, the Griffins are dead.

Family Guy "Vat Man & Rob 'Em"
The ending sucked but I liked the rest. Moses was funny in particular. When he ask who the dude's desk was, when the guy responds he says "My man."
Peter made an interesting observation about the Magical Black Man trope in Hollywood. That the trope has been around forever and it's just recently people have objected to it. For some reason, the writers seem to think that makes the objections invalid. If you ask me, people putting up with that crap for so long is the objectionable thing. And I don't mean just because the trope feeds into racism and stereotypes. It tends to create poorly written characters and scenarios too. If the writers of this show don't find the trope racist, can they at least celebrate its retirement knowing there will be fewer utterly crappy movies in the future? Silver lining?
Honestly, I was mad Peter wasn't fired. I can't believe what that character gets away with.
I love how much Chris is dunking on Stewie for no apparent reason. What's funny is that Stewie's behavior with Chris is normal for him with Brian, but because he's not Alpha to Chris, Chris finds it tiresome instead. This isn't just a good character moment. It's a good moment to realize that a LOT of the Brian and Stewie hijinks are stupid and badly written, and we just accept their dumb behavior and lines because it's a dumb cartoon. The stuff with Chris was a brilliant and subversive Mea Culpa about that. I'm wondering how many viewers will actually recognize that as what it is, and how many will simply think Chris himself is being annoying. I wonder that very much. It could go either way with that specific messed up fandom.
And in case you don't think Chris is entitled to a little rage in his life, his voice-over pointing out naked pictures were taken of him without his consent, and his father doesn't care says he is. Let me also offer another opinion. That was WAY too far out of bounds to portray Principle Shepherd doing. There are very few characters on the show I sort of like. Shepherd used to be one of them. Not anymore. It amazes and disgusts me how willing the show is to destroy its own characters for the sake of a cheap unfunny jokes. It's like the writers don't actually care about health of the franchise at all. That specific fact fills me with disgust.
All my complaints aside, I do feel this was a pretty strong week. Which tells you how weak the show is in general if this is above average. In fairness, once in awhile the show is actually amazing. But this week being able to be confused for acceptable is not a great turn of events. The Great North wins this week of Fox Toons. ***1/2.

To be fair, one of the bigger episodes a few years back depicted him both kissing and seductively gazing into the skirts of Cabbage Patch dolls. I’d have almost nothing to praise Shepherd for if it wasn’t for me already being accustomed to Gary Cole’s VA capabilities. I fear the character itself was always destined for degeneracy. The off-screen narration to me was less about Chris being entitled to rage, and more about Family Guy desperately pleading the viewer to laugh at the weird pedophile joke a second time. I agree with you though that it is shitty. That being said, I think it’s a lost cause at this point to even get annoyed when the characters inevitably start self-destructing. The damage done to this show a decade ago can’t be undone. I just try to make do with whatever is thrown at me. And maybe I’m part of the problem. But ultimately, it’s not my job to write for them. I’ve been watching this crap for twenty years now, mainly because I somehow still find it more entertaining than a lot of the other stuff that’s on. It’s like my equivalent to the even suckier SNL. I should let go but I just can’t. - - - - - - - - - - [ From Russia With Love] I’m not sure what I was expecting this week, but was still left underwhelmed. Brian’s online handle being d0gbackwards I found smirk-worthy. And I liked Stewie’s response to the Vodka O’clock post. At a loss with some of the other stuff. I mean if you’re gonna have a premise as dull as having Brian be stressed over his goddamn Instagram, Stewie & Chris should’ve just trolled him some more. The one time I wanted to see more of Meg, her appearance somehow still felt bare-bones. She had good scenes, but they basically kept her in Russia so they could write her out of the episode early. And it took over ten minutes to even really get to her. It is nice that she’s friendly to Brian again. I get not everything can be a Road To episode, but man. Meg was real committed to not responding to Stewie at all. Sometimes they push to bend the rules a bit, and I guess this wasn’t one of those times. Mila got to spit some Russian, as predicted. They gave a more logical explanation as to how Meg can speak Russian: AOL chat rooms. Think they might’ve implied also that she’s a 4chan girl.... It just seemed like an utter waste of not just that trio, but also a waste of a more outlandish setting. I guess it was a fair enough call to not have the Russia/Ukraine war interfere with their story. I wouldn’t have even wanted that anyway. Wait a minute- scratch that. “Saving Private Brian” but it’s Brian & Stewie fighting for Ukraine. Lol, contact me, showrunners! B story with Lois is one I’m also indifferent to. I was kind of surprised actually that they stuck with continuity and kept insisting Lois was humiliated in Junior High. ‘Cause every other flashback, she was the cheerleader and in one case the real school bully. I think it would’ve been more funny if Lois really showed herself doing assholish things, but she just went on one lame little tirade and Mandela Effect’d the entire thing. It also felt like Quagmire was just there and had no actual weight to being this “bully’s” boyfriend. Peter cutting people off in traffic was the most hilarious thing from this week, and probably the one thing from the episode that I’ll actually remember. EDIT: Phew, egg on my face. I didn’t realize next week’s finale would continue on with Meg in Russia. That’s interesting. Not the first time they ended an episode with her in another country, so that threw me off.

I actually loved the bit with the Cabbage Patches. Why? Because the show was able to show Shepherd doing something totally gross and objectionable. Without him actually harming anybody. Yeah, Stewie got his bum-looked. But not deliberately. Family Guy usually shows its characters are creeps by having them do disgusting and illegal things. The Cabbage Patch was funny to me because it's ultimately harmless.
Until last week that is. Now the guy belongs in jail. How hard is it not to turn your entire cast into pedophiles? I don't think that is actually the unfathomable burden Family Guy is making it out to be.

While there wasn’t any harm, they were still displaying the idea that Shepherd’s into small children.
A pedophile could never act out and should probably still never see the light of day just for having that idea in his head.
I suspect the only time FOX ever told them to chill out on that front (besides Quagmire raping/killing Marge) was when they had a random influx of nonce jokes with Peter. One even suggesting he’s been collecting some photos long before the series premiered. And then they suddenly stopped making those jokes about him.
Sometimes it surprises me how much the network censors have broken down over time. They used to frequently cut scenes to either hand over to Adult Swim, or they’d just remove scenes from televised broadcasts altogether. For how much FG whines about modern times, they don’t even have to walk on eggshells anymore like they used to.

I have several Cabbage Patch Kids. Here is a secret: EVERYONE looks at the butts. It's where the creator of the dolls Xavier Roberts puts his name in green ink on every one. The fact that the cracks are stitched in is hilarious. I was like "How did they know that?" I was laughing and feeling like the worst person ever for have done that. But the butts on Cabbage Patch Kids are part of the joke. It's not sexual. It's just something that is done by people who own the dolls. I was like "Somebody on the staff actually knows something about how owning the dolls works." The fact that they turned it sexual and disturbing is why I found it funny. Family Guy takes the most harmless shit and puts in the worst possible light. And I couldn't stop laughing. I was like "Whoever wrote the episode had one of the dolls as kid".

In that case, I greatly stand corrected. I’ve been around Cabbage Patch dolls, but have never taken a gander at the buttocks and didn’t know that factoid. I assumed just by the look, how uncomfortable Stewie was, and the known nature of Family Guy that it was something sexual. I now retract my previous statement. I was gifted a Bart Simpson doll in the 90s which I still have that has Matt Groening’s signature on his ass. So I guess I can take from that similarity. I apologize. That’s now 2 consecutive times within this review where I had my own foot in my mouth! Although...Shepherd did still smooch on the thing. But it is more innocent than I thought.

You are arguing with a person who currently owns 1983 different stuffed animals so I know of what I speak. You never had a prayer.
For the record, you thinking what Shepherd was doing as sexual is MY interpretation too. It's like they took something totally normal for owners of the dolls and suggested it was sinister simply by making what he did authentic. Do I sometimes check out the butts of my plushies? Yes. Do I ever do it with a gross leer on my face or half make out with them when I do it? No. That's why the joke is damning to doll owners like myself, and why I found it both hilarious and twistedly relatable. But yes, Shepard is a bad guy for doing it the way he is. It's hilarious the show is taking a normal part of doll ownership and making it such an evil seeming thing, but its authenticity is the best part of the joke.

Family Guy "From Russia With Love"
So wait, are they doing an arc with Meg in Russia now? I guess we'll see next week.
I love the animal PSA with the wrong music. So wrong and so funny.
I love that Lois' note upon Brian's Instagram pimp is to lament she never expected him to live this long. Because that's the correct reaction.
The bullying stuff with Lois didn't really lead anywhere interesting.
Brian continues to be a cheapskate at the end.
The episode handled the fact that Meg isn't actually supposed to be able to really understand Stewie pretty well. She never directly responds to anything he says.
I like Peter in his sex costume calling down and saying he hopes everybody is having fun at the pool party.
Newspapers: Because your parrot can't poop on an iPad.
Another well-worn reminder that Brian is color-blind. Between that and the car ride offer I'm like, "We get it. He's a dog."
Bonnie ALSO noted the placement of the Stephanie's stretch marks. Women on this show are the worst. The writers clearly don't think much of them.
Peter loves us. I don't agree with him, but that's probably only because I'm on the outside of that mess. I guess it kind of works for them.
I love the idea that Lois always writes down the names of Quagmire's Girlfriends in case he ever "becomes a Dateline". I love it being put like that. Perfect for those Katillsday Night Mysteries. Don't watch it alone. Seriously, is that the absolute worst tagline for a newsmagazine of all time? I've been alive 47 years and cannot think of a worse one. And I lived through John Stossel. Give me a break!
Meg says in Russia you can eat root vegetables straight from the ground and not be placed in an involuntary psych hold. Meg, honey, that's a drawback, not a selling point. If the rules on that were entirely different, I'm betting Vlad Putin would not be where he is.
Decent episode. Bob's Burgers won Fox Toons tonight. ***1/2.
